No Weigh: A Collection of Altered Scales

Posted by

For many women, the ritual of stepping on a scale is a daily source of anxiety, disappointment and self-loathing. This new collection is dedicated to them.

The “No Weigh” installation is a series of vintage bathroom scales, each upcycled into a small assemblage featuring recognizable found objects that have potential to inflict pain. While every scale has been carefully restored to working condition, they are no longer functional for the purpose of measuring pounds or – more importantly – a person's worth. Now, they serve only to convey a cautionary tale of the dangers of being obsessed with weight and to encourage women to step away from the scale.

As someone who has struggled with a negative body image since childhood, I remain conflicted on the subject of weight and continues to work toward loving the body I am in.

The opening reception for this collection will be held on Friday, May 20, 2016 at Re/Dress, a plus size vintage and modern style boutique in Lakewood, Ohio. Following the closing of the exhibition and sale, prints and t-shirts of the images will be sold in my online store.
